UP 2010 SHOW
|
|
As
a keen photographer and festival goer,
I was really pleased to be asked to cover
this years festival for Moonshine Magazine.
I wasn’t too worried when on Thursday
morning I woke up to a rainy day. I’m
a happy little camper and I wasn’t
about to let a little bad weather dampen
my spirits. I arrived at the showground
mid afternoon and in between showers and
with a little help from a neighbouring
camper managed to get my tent up in what
was to turn into a very wet and windy
day but even so I could see the campsite
was already filling up nicely.
There were three bands on Thursday night,
a little late starting due to the bad
weather and the inevitable technical glitches
that brings, but it didn’t spoil
the party atmosphere.
Things really got into full swing on Friday
though, with The Brown Bottle Band kicking
off the proceedings on the indoor stage
as promised. The weather had improved
a little too and I spent the day backwards
and forwards between the two stages so
as not to miss anything. It was good to
see Dawn Trader who hadn’t played
for over twenty years and I have to admit
I did tarry a while when Juicy Lucy took
to the main stage in the afternoon. The
highlight of my Friday though was AC/DC
UK, who rocked it to a packed marquee,
it’s not the easiest thing to take
pictures whilst you’re dancing!
And after finding my tent had survived
the weather (although a little damp) I
fell into my sleeping bag exhausted, wondering
what the next day would bring.
Saturday and the campsite was packed and
I spent the morning wandering around the
many stalls and taking pictures of the
bikes rolling into the arena. It was much
more relaxed and it was good to see so
many families at the festival.

In
the afternoon after the Tattoo Competition
I headed over to the indoor stage to
catch The Ramonas, the only all girl
band on this weekend and I wasn’t
disappointed. After which I left the
tent to the cheers of the guys watching
the pole dancers ringing in my ears.
Then it was the turn of the Custom Bikes
to take the stage, and even the sun
made an appearance which just about
made it a perfect Saturday afternoon.
By the time I headed over to the main
stage early evening to catch Are You
Experienced, a very good Hendrix tribute
I could see the crowds already beginning
to gather for the Vampires Rock Show.
As I jostled for a place with the other
photographers I could feel the excitement
and anticipation build. There seemed
to be twice as many people this year.
And boy were we treated to an extravaganza.
Steve Steinman as The Baron and a wonderful
Emily Clark as Pandora were joined on
stage by Toyah as the Evil Queen as
they belted out all the favourite rock
anthems.
I was lucky enough to meet up with Toyah
briefly backstage and grab a couple
of quick photos before heading back
to the Grand Finale of the weekend The
Wet T-Shirt Competition…surprisingly
all the male photographers had disappeared,
but there was no shortage of guys asking
if they could swap places with me!
All in all it was a great weekend, this
Rally just seems to get better and better
and I can’t wait to see what next
years brings….Roll on 2011

Juicy
Lucy had been championed by John
Peel who discovered them whilst
he was working as a DJ in the US. He was
so impressed that he produced their first
recordings in 1966 and invited them to
come to the UK, an offer they later took
up. However, having made it to the UK
the Vietnam draft in the US and problems
with UK immigration services caused personnel
problems and associated line up changes.
The first single from the self titled
debut album "Who Do You Love?",
a cover of a Bo Diddley song, stamped
it's way up the singles charts in the
UK and several European countries in the
spring of 1970, finally reaching number
14 in the UK and staying on the chart
for three months. The album cover itself
caused quite a stir, featuring as it did
a woman lying naked, surrounded (and modesty
preserved) by fruit!

A ball-crunching, ferocious, non-stop
rock n' roll tribute to the loudest and
dirtiest rock band on the planet. Taking
the four-piece line-up from the early
90's faithfully reproduces the massive
wall of sound that is Motorhead.
The look of the band on stage is authentic:
Phil
Campbell : cowboy hat & long leather
coat; .
Wurzel : bandanna, wrist bands, and bullet
belt;
Mikkey
Dee: the powerhouse with muscles and blonde
locks.
And finally, Lemmy complete with iron
cross, shades, white cowboy boots - and
of course, his original 1975 Rickenbastard
bass.

The
Ramonas are the UK's only all girl tribute
to the Ramones, one of
the most influential punk rock bands in
history.
The
Ramonas capture the magic which the Ramones
had in their early days with their intense
on stage energy levels whilst looking
much better than Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee
or Marky ever did. Unfortunately it will
never be possible to see the Ramones live again so the Ramonas are the next
best thing for any punk rock fan.

| Toxic
Federation are a Derby based Rock band
emerging as one of the most exciting musical
forces in the Midlands. Toxic Federation
have amassed huge support in the Midlands
and have growing support across the UK.
Adrenalin
fuelled live shows are remembered for
incredible guitar and drum performances,
a consistently exciting stage act, and
an ever present atmosphere that just
screams "This band know just how
to push your buttons".
The music is built on soaring, passionate
guitar lines, thundering solid bass,
and incredible, intricate drumming.
Toxic Federation have been compared
to many world-class bands, spanning
from the present, back to the 70's and
the birth of hard rock, but are increasingly
being known to have a style that doesn't
quite follow anyone.

Faith
Healer support Unleash @MFN (review by
GD)
"It's back down the old MFN for the
Wednesday bike night. With much needed
August sunshine the turn out tonight is
probably the best of the season so far
and two bands are here to entertain us.
First up is Faith Healer making their
second visit to thunder valley these local
guys give us half an hour of classic rock
covers with a big slice of zeppelin thrown
in. The highlight of their short set for
me was Black Sabbath's NIB and Led Zepps
whole lotta love Faith Healer have only
been together a very short time but some
of the guys in the band have been kicking
around the local music scene for ages
so have plenty of experience, an entertaining
hors d'oeuvre indeed."

Quadrophonia
are a tasty tribute band playing the music
of
THE WHO!
They
line up as a four piece as The Who did
in their golden era and it is this era's
Live at Leeds sight and sound they emulate.
Originally
formed to perform Quadrophenia, hence
the name, Quadrophonia have broadened
their set to include Tommy and all the
hits from the classic albums.
Hiwatt
Amps, Rickenbacker and SG guitars, white
boiler suits and Dr Martens, loony drummers,
skeleton suits, mic's whirling arms windmilling
and cymbals crashing all over the place....

‘ARE
YOU EXPERIENCED?’ were formed
over twelve years ago and in that time
they have become widely regarded as
just about the best JIMI HENDRIX tribute
show you will see. Guitarist John Campbell
bears more than just a passing resemblance
and has drawn on his many years of playing
in different bands and various styles
to perfect his ‘Hendrix’
persona. When he plays his strat behind
his head and with his teeth, it brings
a smile to the face of even the most
finicky Hendrix fan.
The
band are proud to be playing the timeless
music of JIMI HENDRIX, providing some
nostalgic moments for those lucky people
who actually witnessed Jimi in the flesh
and recreating some of the magic for
a new and eager audience.

Dawn
Trader
Nottingham's Dawn Trader began their
career during the phenomenon known as
the NWOBHM ("New Wave Of British
Heavy Metal") that burst across the
music scene in the late 70's and early
80's. Dawn Trader were not only one of
the finest examples of this genre but
were very definitely Nottingham's best
loved band and (rather unfortunately)
best kept secret. A loyal following of
fans who travelled everywhere to see "their"
band, fantastic musicians, great songs
and an unrivalled stage presence Trader
supported (and frequently blew away) many
bigger acts like Def Leppard, Krokus,
Raven and Magnum.

 |
| Formed
by writer and guitarist Chris Allard in
late 1979 from the ashes of local band Screw,
championed along the way by such luminaries
as Bernie Marsden from Whitesnake and Radio
Trent DJ Graham Neale, the band had a number
of incarnations and line ups during their
six or seven year career. |

Punk's
Not Dead!
Keeping the 'Spirit of 1977' flame burning
brightly, old school punk rockers Verbal
Warning release their highly-anticipated
second album, Red Star Radio, this May.
The band, who also throw in some well
know crowd-pleasing covers into their
high-energy show, have played all over
the country, including the world-famous
Rebellion festival at Blackpool Winter
Gardens in 2008, and 2010 actually marks
the 30th anniversary of the first gig
of their original line-up.

Nimming
Ned
As organisers of the UK’s
largest regional beer festival,
it is essential that the acts
we hire tick all the right boxes.
With Nimming Ned you get “exactly
what it says on the label".
They are one of the easiest bands
I have had the pleasure of working
with. Their stage presence and
interaction with the audience
is brilliant. Their quirky tunes
& clever lyrics are well conceived
& put across clearly, to an
audience who thoroughly enjoyed
the humour and the banter. I would
have no hesitation in recommending
them.

Beer Festival. |

ZZ
Hot
We’re
not as good as the real ZZ Top because
they are probably the coolest guitar
boogie rock outfit on the planet
ever. It’s impossible to see
them and not have a good time. The
charisma, humour, talent and style
just pour off the stage and the
audience love it. While not the
‘cleverest’ of bands
- although the songs are deceptively
tricky to learn - they have somehow
taken the sound of a guitar, bass,
drums and vocals and infused them
with whisky, hot rods, motorcycles,
sex and Mexican food. They carry
this atmosphere around with them
wherever they go and turn every
venue into an ‘off the wall
cantina’ from ‘ south
of the border’. Then they
tear it up.
|
 |
| We
try to do the same but we’re
only mortal. Perhaps if we had another
40 years to practice we could be as
good but I doubt it. I’ve never
seen another band do it like ZZ Top. |
